JEWISH "AT HOME."

A large reception was held v by the Auckland Jewish Club last evening to welcome to Auckland Mrs. Henrietta Jrwell, vice-president of the London Women's International Zionists' Organisation. She was accompanied l>3 , her niece, Miss Enid Foster. The elubrooms were delightfully decorated with large bowls of arum lilies and the glowing yellow of daffodils and Iceland poppies. At the conclusion of the proceedings supper was served in the, room above, and during this Mrs. Invell and her niece were introduced to the guests. Mrs. Trwell wore black lace artistically draped with wide winged sleeves finished with chiffon. Miss Foster was in pink georgette and a wrap of Oriental lame. Mrs. David Nathan, whose guest Mrs. Irwell is at Manurcwa, wore black taffeta and tulle, and Miss Jacqueline Nathan was in buttercup yellow satin. On arrival, the guest of honour was welcomed by a guard formed of Jmlean Girl Guides. Mr. Alfred Nathan, president of the Auckland Hebrew congregation, performed the welcome, and in presenting Mrs. Irwell to the gathering, referred to her activities for the welfare of children. Mrs. David Nathan, in the name of the Jewish women of Auckland, and as Dominion president of the New Zealand Women's Zionist Society, stated that she had met Mrs. Irwell when travelling in Palestine, where her work for the children of the Holy Land was as much appreciated as it was in London and other parts of the world. The Rev. S. A. Goldstein welcomed the guests both as Rabbi and president of the Auckland Zionist Society. He stated that Mrs. Irwell's knowledge of Zionism was extraordinary. She was a woman who was devoting herself to the good of her people, ho said, and her exhortations would be an inspiration to the.development of Zionism. In thanking, those present for their warm welcome on her arrival in Auckland, Mrs. Irwell referred to the initiative New Zealand women had in starting the work of infant welfare in Palestine. She then gave a brief account of several trips to the Holy Land and mentioned the great improvement in social conditions that had taken place since the war. The motor car was a great help in opening up the country and enabled the tourist to sec for himself in a day and a half what previously took four days. Mrs. Irwell laid great stress on the importance of infant welfare work in Palestine and spoke of the work being done in the centres. Mr. N. Salas, president of the Auckland branch of the Zionist Society, and Mr. Lewis Phillips, also spoke,* and thanked Mrs. Irwell for her address, which was both instructive and interesting.
