SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Overseas League held a. bridge party in the Delmonico Cafe last evening. Among those attending were: Mrs. Kirkcr, Mrs. Coats, Mrs. Feathereton, Mrs. Xewton King, Mrs. Clayton (Sydney), Mrs. W. Kenderdine, Mrs. 'Maxwell, Mrs. Woodhead, Mrs. Wilson, Mrs. Gore Martin, Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Sutherland, Misses Young, Quayle, Kirkcr, Kissling (2), Orehiston, Swan, McLeay, Cook, Major, Early, D. Smith, Brown, Tottan, McClymont. ,-♦*»» The Scots Ball presented a gay scene on Monday evening when the Auckland Retail., Shop Assistants' Union Charity Club held a springtime carnival dance, there being a splendid attendance' of dapcers. Particularly attractive were the decorations, streamers of jade and capicine were looped from the sides of the haH_/fco t'he centre, 'big coloured butterflies covered ifche chandeliers, multicoloured lighting effects, and innumerable balloons lent a spirit of gaiety to the atmosphere. Edgar Bendall'e Collegians, who played all requested music, occupied the. stage under a bower of coloured electric lights and greenery. Popular novelties and favours were distributed in the course of the evening. Members of the committee present were: Misses Purcell, Steinmetz, Christie, Mgecumb, Goodwin and Mrs. Burgess.

An enjoyable gathering took place on Saturday at "Rangiwhai," the home of firs. G. Edwards, of Pah Avenue, Epsom, £ honour of her nephew, Mr. Jack fvniglit. The lounge and social room leading from the lounge and the supper room were tastefully decorated. Miss Rona Edwards sang. Mrs. G. The monthly meeting of the Takapuna branch of the New Zealand League of Mothers waa held in St. Peter's Parish Hall yesterday, when Mrs. J. W. Bart'rum presided. Dr. Mildred Staley- gave an interesting address on "Penal Reform," showing some of the advances made in America and Canada in the treatment of criminals, especially the child criminal, and the wonderful work done bv the women police. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Thompson, Mr J W. Williamson, Mrs. A. b. tfojcl, Mrs. It.
