CARRIERS' APPLICATION.
A carrying firm of Onehunga, Sutherland and* Pearson, also applied for exemption, on the ground that its employees, who loaded goods at the wharf, are already governed by the drivers' award.
Mr. Roberts, for the union, said no objection was taken to individual drivers loading and unloading, but there was strong objection to a number appearing and doing watersiders' work for part of the time and drivers' work for other time. If the application was granted it would be contrary to the interpretation laid down by Mr. Justice Sim and unfair to other parties to the award who were similarly engaged as the applicants.
Mr. S. E. Wright said the employers in this case contended they were bound by the drivers' award, which also allowed drivers to assist one another in the loading and unloading for employers.
