"JACOB'S LADDER."

A PONSONBY GRIEVANCE,

"Annoyed Ratepayer" writes, supporting a recent complaint: "Mrs. E. Hutton is to be congratulated on her explicit and straightforward statement regarding the inconvenience and hardships under which the residents along the Ponsonby waterfront have suffered and are still suffering for the want of a direct outlet to the city. Ours is no ordinary grievance." To think that the outlet so urgently required necessitates the formation only of a few chains of roadway; to think also that the residents of this old-established, densely-populated western district have been waiting patiently for over 20 years for a direct route to the city, and in addition to all of this, to think that the City Council, while delaying-the above work, have calmly voted away hundreds of thousands of pounds toward a magnificent eastern outlet to an area a great part of which still awaits settlement, and which most probably will not be as densely populated for another quarter of ft century as our district is to-day. And while all this has been going on we have hal to pay our rates year by yenr and go on climbing our ladder way. Well, if this is not a thoroughly exasperating situation for all those living along the western waterfront, then what hi Perhaps the City. Council think that wo pro the angels on this so-called Jacob's Ladder. Well, all I can say to that is that we have not the patience of Job and that what we did possess of that virtue has long since been exhausted and has been replaced by a feeling that we are entitled to far better treatment. Our claim is beyond dispute, and in order to safeguard the lives and limbs of all those who use or desire to use the western root© we- want the council to carry the work out at once."
