STALLARD CUP.

RICHMOND'S SURPRISE

RE-PLAY NECESSARY.

Richmond caused a big surprise at Carlaw Park on Saturday, when the maroons defeated Otahuhu, leaders in the Rugby League's Stallard Cup competition. This was Otahuhu s first defeat, and a play-off with Point Chevalier is now necessary. Few that witnessed the game ever expected the least opposition from Richmond, who met with little success in the championship <james. Beaten narrowly in many games. Richmond held together and showed improved form in the opening games of the present knock-out round. Encouraged by early success, the youthful members of the western, district combination put their shoulders to the wheel against the formidable Otahuhu thirteen, which have only been defeated once in twelve games. Both teams had a strong following to headquarters, and a surprise was in store for the early spectators. Richmond re-veiled in the firmer going, and soon added two tries in quick time. They continued to bustle Otahuhu with speedy attacks. Both divisions infused plenty of devil against a pack of forwards, who have carried all before them this season. Richmond's backs did some splendid work in the first half, and eventually won by 11 points to 8. Over-eagerness cost Otahuhu several tries in the second half. Richmond's victory was a popular one.

At full-back, Perry played a solid game, and got through a heavy day's work with honours. Verral played a heady game behind the scrum. Some of his openings were very clever. He is a candidate for A grade honours next season. Deason was perhaps the best of the backs. He showed a lot of speed, and ran determinedly with the ball. Potter was the pick of the forwards, while Farrell and Brian were also good. The latter is the most improved forward in the team. Otahuhu's backs were not so good as usual. Far too much kicking was indulged in. Farrell, Harris and Eustace were the pick. Point Chevalier had a close call against Northcote, who extended the grade winners. Duncan scored for Point Chevalier, while Monaghan added a. penalty goal. Northcote have a promising team, capable of winning against good sides. On Saturday the seasiders were unlucky to be beaten, two goals being missed from easy positions. Had it not been for the individual play of Monoghan, McLaren and Drincan, Point would have missed the re-play with Otahuhu. Lane played soundly at full-back. McMillan and McLaren were good on attack. Smith was a weak kick, being overshadowed by Monoghan. Point's forwards worked hard, Goodwin and Kindly being most prominent. For Northcote, Robertson played a sterling game at full-back. He was the best back on the ground. Kindly also did useful work at five-eighths.

Parnell forfeited its game against Mangere. but journeyed to Huntlv, and met the Waikato thirteen. Huntly won a well-contested game by 21 points to 16. The local team speak highly of their visit, and an enjoyable outing wa< spent. Kerr, Anderson and H'nplayed good football for Parnell, who- ' backs put up a splendid showing. At a smoke concert held in the evening, special mention was made of the untiring efforts of Mr. W. Northmore, the Huntly Club's secretary, whose arrangements were appreciated.
