BUS LICENSE REFUSED.
CITY TO EIXERTON ROAD.
COMPETITION WITH TEAMS
Authority to establish a motor omnibus service between Ellerton Road and the city "was refused to M. W. Carews, whose application came before the Auckland Transport Board this morning, supported by a petition from 154 residents of the Mount Eden and Dominion Road areas.
The proposed route was to commence at the corner of Ellerton Road and Kensington Avenue, thence along Richmond Road, BalmQral Road, Grange Road, Valley Road, Sherbourne Road, View Road and Esplanade Road to Mount Eden Road.
The application was considered in committee. Strong opposition to the granting of a license was raised by the management. The route outlined, it was stated, was practically midway between the Mount Eden Road and Dominion Road tram routes and the Dominion Road bus route, and for only about 50 chains of its 350 chains was it more than a quarter of a mile from one or other of the tram and bus routes. The greatest distance between the two parallel tram routes was 57£ chains. Although the petitioners submitted that the service would tap an area at present without adequate facilities, the board took the contrary view, and refused a license.
