VICAR OF ST. MARY'S.
CANON W. FANCOURT. FOLLOWING IN FATHER'S FOOTSTEPS. PIONEER WORK IN NEW ZEALAND, (By W.KH.)
The induction of Canon W. Fancourt as vicar of St. Mary's Cathedral, Parneil, which will take place this evening, recalls that his father, Archdeacon Fancourt, took .a prominent part in Anglican Church life in earlier days : of New Zealand.' The new vicar will have a wonderful record to live up: to,, ae his father, grandfather and great-grand-father were all'ministers of the Church of .England.
Archdeacon Fancourt was born in 1840 at Malvern, Worcestershire. Hβ was educated at Lancing College, Sussex, and aftei' spending a short time as. a missionary in India came to Nevy, Zealand. At that time thero were not more than a dozen clergymen in the Wellington diocese. Archdeacon Fancourt was ordained as a priest in 1867. He travelled extensively in connection with church work, the church district at that time including Hawke's Bay. A broadminded man, ho was popular with all creeds, and his life- wae an inspiration to others. The people of the districts he was associated with knew him as an unassuming, practical Christian gentleman, who took a full share in the pioneer work of the Dominion. »
