LOCAL MANAGEMENT.

SELECTION OF REFEREES. STRONG DISSATISFACTION EXPRESSED. Lengthy discussion on a proposal to alter the method of appointing referees for senior.grade matches took place at the Auckland Rugby League's management committee meeting last evening. Mr. G. Rhodes presided. In introducing the matter Mr. W. J. Davidson read a paper on the proposed alterations to the appointments board. There was dissatisfaction among players who had requested delegates to make changes whereby the management committee took over the control of appointments to senior matches. Mr. Rhodes: I will not take any motion until the Referees' Association has been advised of our proposal. There must be absolute harmony over the matter. Mr. B. Longbottom said that he was firmly of the opinion that the best referees were not appointed, and there was no doubt that the standard of refereeing was bad. Mr. H. Salmon said that the appointments to senior matches were certainly unsatisfactory. It was time the management committee gave its players more confidence. More rigid control of the appointments was advocated by Mr. R. Doble. One referee, who had given satisfaction in past years, had been driven out of the game, and it appeared that one had to be in a select circle to be appointed to senior A grade matches. After further discussion it was decided to recommend to the Referees' Association the following:—"That the appointments board comprise: (1) Chairman of the Referees' Association; (2) a member of the advisory committee, to be nominated by the Auckland Rugby League; (3) a nominee of the management committe, such appointee to be in no way associated with any club, and to be chairman of the appointments board. It was further decided to ask the Referees' Association to meet the management committee on September 14 and discuss the matter. The meeting decided to communicate with the Northland and South Auckland Leagues suggesting a match at Auckland on September 14 on conditions to be forwarded by the secretary. The schoolboys committee was granted permission to send a team to Hikurangi, and a sum of £15 was donated toward the expenses. It was decided to place a referee who was injured in a recent match on the free insurance scheme. The following transfers were approved:—J., W. and L. Wilson. Mansrere to Kingsland; T.
