LEAGUE CLUB FINAL

DEVONPORT V. PONSONBY. CARLAW PARK ATTRACTION. GOOD GAME EXPECTED. After many notable struggles the Auckland Rugby League's senior championship final has been reached, and to-morrow Ponsonby and Devonport, who are on level terms, will decide at Carlaw Park who is to hold the coveted- Monteith Shield for the 1920 season. Keen interest is being manifested in the clash, which is expected to produce tho brightest football of a, vintage season. Poneonby has twice been defeated by the seasiders, but they are a greatly improved side, who revel,in heavy going or are a side to be contended with on a dry day. Shore show to best advantage on a dry ground, but they have also played some rattling good games in the mud and slusli. Whatever comes or goes, there should be little between the teams who play the fast, open game that League fans appreciate. The curtain-raiser will be provided by the Mangere and Point Chevalier senior B grade teams, while Marist and Ellerslie will meet on the Domain to enga-ge in a game postponed from earlier in the season. City will journey to Huntly to play a local side, and Senior B matches for'the Stallard Cup and junior games will be continued on suburban grounds. The teams are as follow: — DEVONPORT.

OTAHUHU STILL LEADS. THREE CLOSE GAMES. The third series of matches in the first round of the Stallard Cup competition were played under wrctchod conditions. Heavy grounds were again the order, and the matches were closely contested. Otahuhu retained their unbeaten record by winning from Mangere, whoso form was distinctly good. ,fiie Maoris may yet cause a surprise. Northcote played fine football against Richmond and secured two unconverted tries, while the maroons failed to score. The match between Point Chevalier and Parnell was not seriously contested. The prevailing influenza affected Parnell, who were minus five of the usual team. Juniors filled the vacancies and gave a good account.of themselves. Point had a fairly strong thirteen, and under the circumstances Parnell did well to fecore within three points of the championship winners. Point continue to experiment with their backs and positions were again changed with the view of working up better combination with the available talent. Point are keen to win a, place in tho A section and considerable interest is being displayed in the district, where the team has a solid following. „ „ Point won by 11 points to 8. The winners were too strong in the forwards and controlled the ball ably in the loose. ...The champions have an addition in McLean, a rugged forward from the Union code. Ho is a typical front ranker and with experience should do well. Goodwin played a grand game as back-row forward. His pace and fine tackling were •noticeable features. McPherson and Horton also did useful work.

Callender played a sound game at fullback, 'making few mistakes. McMillan was a success at five-eighth. The exRichmond senior is a heady player on attack. Monoghan was reliable as usual. Duncan made some nice openings and may be tho ideal centre Point aro after. Lane and McLaren got few chances on the wing. Humphries will play regularly behind the pack, as it is stated Cronin is finished for the season. But for a fatal mistake in looking for an interception, which resulted in a try, Kerr played "well as full-back for Parnell. Gordon and Purdy were the pick of the three-quarters. Anderson was easily tho best back. With more support the five-eighth might easily have scored on two occasions. Little and Reid (a junior) did good work. Parnell's forwards played solidly and held their own in the scrums. Veart got a fair share of the ball, while Donaldson and York gave excellent support in the loose. The fight put up by Mangere against Otahuhu was a feature of the series. Mangere disputed every minute of a well contested game, and although s beaten by 12 points to 8, they were by no means disgraced. Mangere Avlil be seen in action at Carlaw Park on Saturday and it will occasion no surprise to see the natives beat Point Chevalier. Otahuhu had too much experience on the heavy ground, their forwards doing some fine work. Phillips at full-back, and Matson at five-eighth, played good games. Farrell was a tower of strength behind the scrum. White, Dodge and Conway were prominent among the forwards.

Brilliant play by Robertson saved Northcote from defeat at the hands of Richmond. Time and again the' seasiders' full-back extricated his team from difficult positions. Robertson is the best full-back in the B section. Thomas, Carter and Keymer also played good games.
