RECAPTURED.

INGRAM IN CUSTODY. CAUGHT NEAR TE HAN A. IN GUMDIGGER'S WHARE. CONSTABLE RYAN'S CHASE. William Ingram,, aged 39, who made a daring escape when he jumped from the Limited express just before it drew into the Auckland railway station last Saturday morning, when he was being escorted from Taihape on a charge of falso pretences by. Constable Batchelor, did not enjoy a long period of liberty, for he was recaptured by Constable Ryan near Te Hana at 2 o'clock this morning. Constable Ryan, formerly stationed at Mount Eden, but now of Wellsford, first picked up Ingram's trail at Hoteo yesterday afternoon. He traced him from there to between Hoteo aitd Tauhora. Ingram then led the constable as far as Kaipara Flats, and thence several miles further north to beyond Te Hana. Constable Ryart followed the escapee

right through the night, and at 2 o'clock this morning he called at a gumdigger's hut and , asked the digger if lie was sheltering a man of Ingram's description. The gumdigger replied that he had given a man something to eat and a bed. Ou entering the small place Constable Ryan found Ingram soundly asleep, tucked in and (snug under several warm blankets. He had no doubt that Ingram wus the man he . wanted, but Ingram strongly denied his identity. "You have made a •mistake, old man," he told Constable Ryan.' * > ; j ■ r Ingram offered 110 resistance. He dressed himself, and in the cold of the early morning was taken to the police cells at Wellsford. He'"was warmly dressed in a smart suit, but his boots and trousers showed signs of the forced inarches he. had been performing since last Saturday.

Ingram walked the whole distance to To Hana, knowing, of course, that it would haVe been courting recapture to go by train. Sometimes he walked along the railway line, and other times by road. In many places ilie roads were lined with mud up to his knees.

Ingram will be brought down to Auckland by Constable Ryan on to-day's Whfvngarei express.
