STOLEN JEWELLERY.
LEE GAOLED FOR RECEIVING. TWELVE MONTHS* HARD LABOUK. ALLEGATIONS AGAINST POLICE. ' Twelve" months'" imprisonment with hard labour was passed on George Lee, the man who was found guilty of receiving stolen jewellery valued at £68, by Sir. Justice Ostler in the Supreme Court this morning. Mr. J. J., Sullivan,, for prisoner, said ,Lae, a married man, thirty-six years of age, had been out of work for some mouths'owing to sheer hard luck and a broken leg.' It was true that, he had been before the Court before and during Ilia trial made allegations, against the 'police, but .counsel appealed to his Honor not to allow that to influence his sentence. Should Lee be shown mercy counsel felt, he. would appreciate.it and go straight in the future;' The judge observed that Lee had seven previous convictions, one being- as recently as May, 1928. 9 His conduct so far ; disclosed no attempted reformation. In addition to that lie made a serious charge against : the policp officers' engaged in the case, whicli the jury-rightly disbelieved. His Honor could, not overlook that and pass over prisoner's, sentence lightly- By sending , him to- gaol for twelve months* however, he was : giving him another chance- .
