A WEDGWOOD MYSTERY.
The price paid by the Empress Catherine of Russia for the famous "Frog Service" has always been something of a mystery. The execution of the order caused Josiah Wedgwood endless anxiety and •trouble; there wag a great deal of preliminary haggling over the price, and it is improbable that he received anything like' the sum of £20,000 mentioned by ppme authorities. Mrs.. WiHoughby Ifodgson, in her charming book "The Quest of the Antique," writes; "Miss jleteyard tells •us that the ultimate cost of this service, inclusive of packing into twentyrtwo eases and shipping {£?• 5/7), .was £2410 10/5." ; • * The exact sum paid to Wedgwood is not known, but it is supposed .that he received about £3000. t
