SERIOUS CHARGE.
MANHIRE NOT GUILTY. A verdict of not guilty was returned by the jury in the ease in wliich- Edward James Manhire, aged 46 (Mr. Hogben) was tried in the Supreme Court yesterday on a charge of taking a Maori girl from the possession of her guardian with intent to know her carnally. Originally two • charges were preferred against accused, but one was withdrawn from the jury by Mr. Justice Ostler, Manhire denied any, intention of abduction or committing offences on the younger of the two Maoris concerned. Prisoner was discharged in accordance with the verdict.
