RATANA CUP GAME,
(From Our Own Correspondent.) TE KUITI, Thursday
A very large number of natives from all parts of the King Country joined with other Rugby football enthusiasts to-day tu witness the contest for the Ratana Cup between Maniapoto (holders) and Hauraki (challengers). The teams—Hauraki (all green) and Maniapoto (all white) —looked to be evenly matched in weight as they took the field. From the kick-off to the last whistle the game was splendidly contested, being fast and open and full of spectacular interest. The green forwards showed better combination, but the Maniapoto rearguard displayed the greater skill, which was responsible for their successful defence of the trophy. From a combined forward rush Roynll secured, found the white full-back out of position, and scored. Hauraki 5, Maniapoto 0. The drop-out was followed by .1 fine passing movement, in which all the Maniapoto backs participated. The attack resulted in Kino running in at the corner. The kick failed. Hauraki 5, Maniapoto 3. The green forwards made repeated attacks, but were driven back by judicious line kicking by the white backs. Then Ratn secured at midfield, and gave the dfimmy to the green backs before handing to W. Jonos, -who scored. Maata missed by inches.
A few minutes later, .Tackson secured from behind the scrum in the green twentyfive, and touched down. Rino goaled. Maniapoto' 11, Hauraki 5. Later, from a Maniapoto forward rush, Kiingi crossed. Weo's kicked failed. Hauraki 14, Maniapoto 5. For Maniapoto, W. Jones, J. Rata and A. Jackson among the backs, and Kiingi, Tane and Timoti in the forwards, were most outstanding. Price, Tohu, Beasley and Cooney (forwards), and Mcßae, Ake and Rore (backs), were most conspicuous for Hauraki.
