The Marine Department recently prosecuted James Johnston and Maurice Field, owner and master respectively of the ship Viking, a, vessel not exceeding six tons register, and propelled by gas, for unlawfully carrying passengers to sea for hire without a duly certificated master or engineer. . Johnston, as owner, was further charged with plying it on navigable water between Paraparaumu and Kapiti Island without a valid certificate of survey. Giving his reserved judgment, the magistrate said he had no doubt that fishing boats, which as such were exempt from the provisions of survey, must, if hired out to fishing or. picnic parties, comply with the provisions of the law.
