MANUREWA TOWN BOARD

The Manurewa Town Board met last evening, the chairman (Mr. G. Gallaher) presiding. Street Lighting.—Mr. C. A. Pawcett reported that, with Mr. G. A. Osborne, he waited on the power board in reference' to the latter's refusal to replace the present street lights with cheaper ones, to enable the erection of additional lights at a cost not exceeding the present total. The power board promised to endeavour to instal lighter bulbs at a cost of £5 each in place of the present £7 10/ lights. Satisfaction with this arrangement was expressed. Balance-sheet.—The balance-sheet presented by the clerk (Mr. H. Kay) was adopted. This showed receipts totalling £2907 0/2, and expenditure totalling £2747, leaving a balance in hand amounting to £160 0/2. Road maintenance! accounted for £649 8/8. j Friedlander's Road.—ln reply to the board's request, the Municipal Association forwarded its opinion regarding the board's powers in respect to Mr. Priedlander's application for permission to erect a gate across this road. The opinion was expressed that the board could have the gate removed at any time this was considered advisable, but that full evidence should first be heard. After discussion it was agreed that no action be taken in the dispute if avoidable, and that both interested parties be written to urging that a mutual agreement be effected. Service Carß.—The traffic inspector {Mr. D. Fletcher) advised the calling of a conference to deal with Mr. Pawcett's suggestion that special speed regulations be framed as affecting service cars. Thursday, 25th inst., was agreed upon as a suitable date. James Road. —Written. complaints were received regarding the condition of the footpath on the northern side of James Road. The matter was referred to the works committee with power to act. South Road.—The Railway Department forwarded a plan indicating the reserves which had been granted to the Great South Road Beautifying Society. It was decided to ask the society to recommend suitable trees and shrubs for these. Street Light—The Anglican Church's application for the erection of a street light at the intersection of Lupton's and Russell Roads was declined owing to the lack of funds. Police Protection.—lt was decided to renew the application to the Department of Justice for the appointment of a resident police officer to cope with the increasing prevalence of larrikinism. Public Library.—Mr. G. A. Osborne gave notice of intention to move that the public library be closed in view of the lack of public support.
