It came as a surprise to football followers on Saturday to learn that "W. Shortland, the ex-North Auckland and Maori Rugby representative half-back, liad thrown in his lot with the City League Club. The brilliant Maori took the field at Carlaw Park against Newton, and played a sterling game, .demonstrating that the thirteeii-a-side code suited his particular 13^ p e of play. Another Rugby "con ve r t was P. Skelton, the ex,Grammar Old Boys' five-eighth, who turned out for POll- - lie signified his entry into the rival code by scoring the first try of the day against Ivingsland-Athletics. He was. also responsible for a second try, making a brilliant cut-in and passing out to his namesake (but no relation), who scored.
