STORM IN WHAKATANE.

WHAKATANE, this day.

A gale of exceptional violence, with heavy rain, swept the Whakatane district yesterday. The windows of many houses were broken, and other minor damage was done. Practically the whole roof was blown off a large garage, used by the Bay of Plenty Power Board. Sheets of iron roofing and timbers were blown several chains along the street.

Heavy seas and wind continued today, but the rain ceased yesterday afternoon. ,
