HINTS TO THE UNEMPLOYED.

If Mr. Hutchison's "Hints for Unemployed" ("Star," Juno 15) mean anything, it is that had the eighty or ninety applicants mentioned by him dotted their "i's," crossed their "t's" pinned their testimonials together and done all those things they ought to have done, their chances of being employed would thereby have increased. This, of course, is an absurdity, for the number of positions available would not be increased, and were fifty per cent of the applications forwarded in the slovenly manner complained of the number disappointed would remain the same. Further, removal of aU blemishes from an application would destroy those signs of incompetence that an employer hopes to detect without proceeding to a personal interview. Mr. Hutchison's dislike for typewritten applications supports this. Had his remarks been addressed to school teachers I should applaud them. Addressed to unemployed adults they seem slightly absurd. As one of the unemployed, I venture to stress a means of assisting us that is as well known to Mr. Hutchison as myself. Let Mr. Hutchison and his Rotarians stock more New Zealand goods. GORDON MORRISON.
