LOCAL RELIEF WORKS.
The Mayor has come back from Wellington to'report that'the Prime Minister's offer of a subsidy is not quite so handsome as it looks, inasmuch as it only takes wages into account. It is a pity that this was not discovered long ago. Mr. Baildon has. put forward a definite scheme, of the cost of which he-estimates the Government would find one-third, but he may be reminded that the Prime Minister's offer has been open for six months. The fact is that the City Couiicii made no special preparation for relief work in the winter, and now we are approaching the middle of that season,. Whatever faults there may-have been in the Government's handling of the problem, theie has certainly been lack of imagination in Auckland. Is it not possible for the local bodies of the Auckland metropolitan area to combine to meet unemployment, pooling their resources and agreeing on a common policy of relief works?
