BUILDING ACTIVITY.
SYDNEY SUBDIVISIONS. MAYOR OF TAXAPI'XA IMPRESSED. After a holiday trip- of six weeks in Australia, Mr. J. W. Williamson, Mayor of Takapuna, and Mrs. Wi'iiainson.__returaed to Auckland by the Marama from Sydney to-day. 'What impressed.. aie most/'., said 31". Williamson, "was.. the tremendous activity -in building in Australia. especially in Sydney. Theatres, warehouses and office premises are springing up everywhere. A lot of subdivision is going on, too—rather too much, I think, for, in my opinion much of the land which is being cut up will not be needed for generations.
"Auckland could well take a, lesson from. Melbourne." continued Mr. Williamson, "in the matter of planning and lay-out. The authorities there "have years ahead, and have provided splendid wide streets and plenty.of open spaces. Sydney is not asleep, and is following Melbourne's example." _ While he was in Australia, Mr. Williamson visited a number of -suburban authorities and gleaned much, useful inrormation, especially about the improvement and control of beaches'.
