MAIN SOUTH ROAD.

! BITUMEN SECTIONS JOINED. PROGRESS OF WORK. (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE KAU WHAT A. this day. Motorists using the Great South Road will be pleased to learn that the bitumen section from Rangiriri northwards has now been linked up with the old 12ft roadway, sealed some two years ago. This old roadway, which is about three and three-quarters of a mile in length, has also been extended well across the big swamp toward Mercer. Taking this section with the OhinewaiRangiriri one. it '"ill be found that there is now a stretch of 10.V miles of bitumen road available for traffic rntl the convenience for winter travelling will be greatly appreciated. Work will be continued on the old 12ft road throughout the winter as weather permits, and it will be strengthened and widened out to ISfc, in conformity with the new roadway. There is a gap of about one mile on the Rangiriri-Ohinewai section, but this | must remain unsealed until the two ! bridges on the deviation are completed and the new roadway consolidated. Between Ohinewai and Huntly two and three-quarter miles have yet to receive treatment to link up with the four miles laid down by the Huntly Town Board. Taking in the Huntly section it will be seen that 14J miles of bitumen road are now available between Hamilton and Auckland. The big obstacle has been keeping the road open for traffic during the whole of the sealing operations and the officer in charge, Mr. L. Oldham, has given this point the closest attention and he deserves the thanks of the travelling public.
