ELDERLY WOMAN'S ESCAPE.

A nine-roomed house, unoccupied) in Princes Street West, Onehunga, belong" ing to Mr. J. Clarke, of Ellerslie, was gutted by fire at about three o'clock tbis morning. When interviewed this morning "Star" reporter Mrs. Dukes said £ did not know how she got through, fire zone, but she did, thanks ta Fire Brigade rescuing her. She owed lie life to them. T. Mr. Clarke's house was vacated about five days ago. When he arrived oil scene this morning ho was told by neighbour on the other side of his hous that she thought she heard sonieon walking about in it about two ocloc this morning. Shortly after that tM fire broke out. The building is covered by a policy for £800 with the Lancashire Insurance Co. The house occupied by Mrs. Dukes is owned by Mrs. Wilson, who is on holiday. Mrs. Dukes' furniture was damaged. It is not insured. FARMHOUSE DESTROYED* A farmhouse owned by Mr. & Tarplett on the Huntly West Ngaruawaliia, was destroyed by ft* *jl Saturday morning. The owned and occupier of 1 dwelling, Mr. James Quin, was avaj■ from home when the outbreak occurred.
