WARNING TO BOAT OWNERS.

ABNORMAL TIDES POSSIBLE

An Auckland resident, who has recollections of a general earthquake in Xew Zealand which appeared to have its origin in the ocean bed, recalls that on that occasion, about 15„years ago, there was a mild tidal wave which resulted in a rise of about three feet in the waters of the Hauraki Gulf. This 'quake is of a much more severe character, and appears to have originated in the ocean bed. Consequently he thinks residents at the sea-level and pleasure craft owners should be prepared for an abnormal rise of the water on the shore and up the small creeks and rivers.

Tides at Auckland are so far normal. Even in the case of a tidal wave starting off the West Coast of the South Island" it would hardly have reached Auckland yet, as such waves usually travel comparatively slowly.

The superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Auckland has received no reports of abnormal tides anywhere on the coast.

Only an earth tremor of exceptional severity can cause a wave great enough to be felt far from the centre of the disturbance. It is not thought that the si:- which rocked New Zealand yesterd; '/ould affect the sea except locally a; 'aces where it was strongest.
