The Government seismologist. Dr. C. E. Adams, at present classes yesterday's earthquake, as "nine" on the RossiForel scale, that is, at Westport and perhaps at Nelson, but more detailed reports, he says, may possibly increase the figure to the maximum, ten.
Until this earthquake only seven deaths in New Zealand had been recorded as definitely attributable; to earthquakes.
