TROTTING.

PREPARING FOR SATURDAY.

TRAINING WORK AT EPSOM.

A thick fog enveloped the course at Epsom early this morning but it cleared shortly before nine o'clock, and the conditions afterwards were ideal for training. The track was in good order, though on the slow side.

Western Voyage (Tomkinson) and Cannonball (Alborn) were companions over a mile and a-half. Cannonball stood his companion up a start, but the pace was never right on, and they were soon together, and remained so throughout. Western Voyage made two slight skips, but did not lose any ground. °

Yv'hite Sun, Vendome, Ethiopian and Vesuvius appeared on the track to work in company. After a warm up thev stepped away to go a mile and a-half, White Sun being in front of Ethiopian and Vendome, with Vesuvius giving them about half a dozen lengths start. Ethiopian was pulled up after going a couple of furlongs. White Sun continued on in the lead, but with half a mile to go there was little between the trio, and they turned into the straight in close company. In the run to the post Vendome and Vesuvius drew away from White Sun and beat him by a couple of lengths. It was a fine piece of work, although the time registered was bettered by others during the morning. Vendome went particularly well. Ethiopian (Tomkinson) was worked separately afterwards and paced evenly and well.

Eose Bingen (Julian) was sent two miles. She mad© no mistakes on the trip, but was not driven at top. Young Blake (Tomkinson) and Link- ! man (Alborn) jumped off at the two- ! mile peg. They went the first half at a 2.30 gait and at the mile and a-half peg Holioro (McMahon) joined in, being a couple of lengths away. At the finish Young Blake and Linkman were together three lengths in front of Hohoro, who threatened to leave his feet a couple of times. The third half-mile of the journey was the best, but the time for the full trip was slow. The Abbey (Clifton) and Goldman (Eoe) were worked out over two miles. Over the last furlong The Abbey was too good for Goldman and beat Mm easily. The Abbey paced evenly all through. # Explosion (Julian) and Great Ballm (Cockle) went away from the mile and a-half peg together, but after going three furlongs Great Ballin dropped back and Explosion really did his work alone. Maiwhariti and Dalmeny were jogged round and then went off at the twomile post, Dalmeny setting out to make the pace. After they had gone half a mils Master Councillor (Evans) joined in and took up the running, with Dalmeny, with Maiwhariti trailing them. They increased the speed a bit over the last half-mile, Master Councillor and Dalmeny finishing with little between them, but Maiwhariti could not get up and inside the last furlong left his feet. Gold Jacket (McMahon) and Jewel Pointer (Julian) put up the fastest time of the morning. They went a mile and a-quarter and kept together till the last 40 yards when Gold Jacket drew out slightly and finishing strongly won nicely. The last half-mile was sprinted at a solid rate. Gold Jacket's performance was the best he has done during the past couple of weeks, and he paced in his best style. Sebisca (Mitchell) trotted two miles, but his display was not impressive. Etta Cole (Gilchrist) and Wah (Fisken) went about two and a half miles without being at top speed at any part. They trotted in fine style and provided one of the treats of the mornino'. Horizon (Eoe) jumped off at the two miles post, but went at little better than a jog for the first half-mile, where he was picked up by Dad's Hope (Clifton). There was no loitering on the trip the first half-mile of the mile and ahal£ being rattled off at a smart dip. The pace continued on, but in the run home Horizon tired and Dad's Hope at the finish had nearly two seconds the best of it. Dad's Hope went particularly well. Many other horses were out, but their tasks were not strenuous, and plenty were noticed doing half pace work.

Evelyn Loeanda was given easy jogging -without the hopples. Native Star and Great Delight arrived this morning from the South to fulfil engagements. R. Berry is not expected to reach Auckland with his team till late in the week. Hal Chimes, Andover and Appeal will possibly not be brought down from Te Awamutu tlill Friday. J. Shaw look Iris team out to Otaliulra this morning, and all were worked on the grass track.
