BOARD OPENS TENDERS.

TWENTY-FIVE NEW BODIES

ACCEPTANCE NEXT TUESDAY,

Tenders were received at a special meeting of the Auckland Transport Board to-day for car bodies, also for truck frames, brake gear and draw gear for 25 cars. The chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, said before the tenders were opened that lie was afraid they could not be dealtli with to-day. He intended moving that they bo referred to the management for schedule and report for consideration at the next meeting of the board on Tuesday. The reason was that the board had decided to widen the car bodics by six inches, namely from 7ft Gin to Bft, and that necessitated an order-in-council. On the suggestion of Mr. E. H. Potter it was decided to open the tenders. The official estimate for car bodies was £142(5 per car, including labour, material, shop charges, etc., and also carrying, out tlio work to fit in with maintenance. The approximate'time for construction on the basis of five cars was 18 months. Two tenders were received. The prices submitted by H. C. Williams were £1105 per car for ten cars and £1155 per car for 20 cars. Cousins and Cousins' prices were £14,350 for ten cars ( £1435 per car) and £27,800 for 20 cars ( £1393 per car).

Ten tenders were received for truck frames, etc., as follow: —W. Wilson, Ltd., £11,000; George Fraser and Sons, £12,110; Mason Bros., £9825 10/8; A. and G. Price, £10,387 19/0; Warren Engineering Co., Ltd., £11,20G; A. and T. Burt, Ltd., £1C),0G9; Thistle Engineering Co., £11,302; Victory Engineering Co., £12,380 14/7; Senior Foundry, Ltd., £9295 10/8; Scagar Bros., £10,920 12/0. Two tenders were not received because of not being in order.

On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. Potter, the tenders were referred to the management for schedulo and report to the meeting of the board 011 Tuesday next.
