FOLLOWED LINE OF ALPS ?
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, this day
Tho earthquake had a. curious effect on the telegraph system, communication with both Wellington and tba West Coast being cut off. This lends colour to the suggestion that the earthquake followed the line of the Southern Alps, and continued into the Kaikouras.
At noon communication with Wellington was established by means of the auxiliary circuit via Kaikoura, the main line being still out of action. Communication was also established with Arthur's Pass before midday, but no stations on the West Coast could be heard.
