THROWN OUT OF ACTION.
OBSERVATORY INSTRUMENTS.
PARTLY RESTORED AT XOON

WELLINGTON, this day. The scismological instruments at the Dominion Observatory, Kelburn, were thrown out of action by the earthquake, and the clocks were stopped. Xo record of the shock can be obtained at present. The chief telegraph office lost communication with all stations south of Blenheim and Nelson at 10.20. At noon communication with Christchureh and Dunedin was partly restored. CENTRE IN SOUTH ISLAND. Tho "Star's" Wellington correspondent says the Nelson postmaster reports that tho earthquake started at 10.17. In Wellington the Parliament Building clocks stopped at 10.18}. The Napier postmaster reported a prolonged shake starting at 10.20. These official timings show tho centre of the disturbance was in the South Island. The telegraph system in the North Island was not interrupted, but at noon only one faulty circuit was available to Christchuicli. and there was no communication with the West Coast of the South Island.
