WELLINGTON ROCKED.
THOUSANDS IN STREET.
V/OMEN SCREAM AND FAINT.
PEOPLE RON FROM BUILDINGS,
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLIXGTOX, this day. Shortly after ten o'clock a prolonged earthquake shock was experienced in Wellington, the whole city being rocked. Women screamed and fainted, and everywhere people ran out of buildings and homes. Some buildings were cracked, and many clocks were stopped, but no serious damage was done.
Many telephones were put out of commission. The post office clock stopped at 10.19 a.m. and bells rang. A few minutes later a crowd was gathered in Feathci'-ston Street, gazing up at the top of the Xational Bank building, and continued to increase till it numbered a thousand. The question appears to be whether the top of the building has gone out of alignment or whethe- it was always as it now appears. A big crowd also assembled outside a high building in Manners Street, under the impression, apparently, that it also had gone out of alignment.
