BOWLING.

ANOTHER FINE SATURDAY.

A ROUND OF VISITS

(By TRUNDLER.)

Last Friday night very few would have dared to anticipate any bowling on the following afternoon, for driving rain and a cold wind made the prospect look hopeless. However, sports bodies again had the luck that has been such a feature of the year, and brilliant sunshine brought most enjoyable conditions. With such weather as there was last Wednesday the tournament at Edendale was impossible and it was postponed indefinitely. It may be held on a Saturday if this is found suitable .for the competitors, und due notice will be given. , ■ Mount Eden are holding an all-day tournament on Wednesday week, the 26th. ~ . The challenge matches again provided three good games, although the detailed returns in another column show startling differences in the results. Ponsonby easily held the. Edwin Stars, heavy scoring giving them a runaway victory, although in the twenty heads played the Ellerslie challengers won nine. The next challengers on the list are D. C. Eraser (Mount Eden), H. Whittle (Grey Lynn), S. W. Thompson (Hillsboro , ) and W T . Bremner (West End). Hillsboro' also retained the Denison Pins, but this was only after a closely contested game. Fortunately for the holders, Sheath was at the top of his form and repeatedly saved a difficult head. - The next challengers are T. R. George (Epsom), W. Platt (New Lynn) and A. A. Brown (Onehunga). The Jordan Pins were soon captured from Onehunga, St. Heliers having an easy win with a strong team, which included the president and ex-president. In accordance with the arrangement whereby these matches have to be played within the Mannkau electorate, the new holders have decided to defend the trophies on the Onehunga green and the next challengers are J. J. Preston (Hillsboro') and P. Lynch (Ellerslie). Challengers will please note that the writer has carried out the arrangement which he suggested at the last meeting of the centre" and for the future the holding skip will receive the challenges for the Edwin Stars. There are twelve in already, so it is just possible that the next two or three to enter may get a game before the winter season closes. The Denison Pins and Jordan Pins will be conducted as before, but challengers would help in the smooth running of these competitions if they would telephone the names of their teams at least a week before they have to play, and if the winning skip will always arrange that the results are telephoned each Saturday evening. On Rawhiti Green. The Nomads mustered up another very large company to visit Rawhiti on Saturday, and the club president, Mr. J. B. Paterson, in welcoming the visitors, said that it was the most representative company that had ever been on the green. The organiser of the wanderers, Mr. J. J. Donnell, adopted a new system in framing his rinks this time. As far as possible he put the club presidents as skips, but several presidents who found themselves unable to attend cent apologies and substitutes. He also endeavoured to have the usual prominent skips playing lead, making thirds of those who are not usually playing in euch a prominent position. Mr. Paterson followed up the play that has been made on the name "Xomad." His dictionary described a Xomad as "one who leads a wandering and pastoral life," and as "Rawhiti" means "sunshine" he congratulated them on their wisdom in wandering into the sunshine on such a magnificent afternoon. His only impression of their doings, however, was that their title could be much better enlarged into "No Object More Actively Deserving Support." although somebody had wickedly suggested that they were "Naughty Old Men, All Donnell's Supporters." However, whatever they were, he and his club were very glad to see them, and he hoped they would come again before the winter was over. He expressed his obligation to Messrs. Macpherson and Sharkey, who had so actively assisted the greenkeeper, Mr. Wheale, in preparing the green for the afternoon. This latter observation would be endorsed by the visitors, for the green was in very nice order, especially considering all the heavy rain during the previous night. The welcome was acknowledged by Mr. J. J. Donnell, who announced that the Xoinads had accepted an invitation to To Papapa next Saturday, but on that occasion there would be room for only five rinks. Mr. J. W. Hanlley also spoke, referring to the sociability of these gatherings, and to their representative nature. "He was glad to sec that this one again included Mr. J. S. Fletcher, M.P., who would soon be leaving the city, I to spend a few months in Wellington to i attend to his new duties. Mr. Fletcher I briefly acknowledged the welcome, and ! bade the party an official farewell. Au ! rcvoir. ' The annual meeting of the Auckland i Centre will be held on Wednesday wee-c. Although only delegates may speak and vote, any bowler may attend, and will nrobably find the meeting of much ■nterest. Those who have looked in for the first time have often expressed their -urprisc at the nature of the important matters discussed, and almost any bowler would get a new insight into the government of the game by occasionally attending.
