AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

BARKER WINS SPRINT. STEEPLECHASE TO SAVIDAN. The Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club continued its winter meetings at the Domain, where some interesting sport was witnessed. There was a fine muster of athletes in both the sprint and the steeplechase. L. C. Barker won the sprint by six inches, while J. W. Savidan won the steeplechase in very convincing style. Results were: — 75 YARDS DASH. First Heat.—L. C. Barker 1, A. Clarke 2, It. G. Kirkwood 3. Time, 7 .4-os. Won by inches. Second Montgomery 1, C. Torbfitt 2, J. W. Savidan 3. Time, 7 3-ss. Won by 3yds. Final. L. C. Barker 1 C. Tornett - It. G. Kirkwood Time 7 3-ss. Won by six inches, with second and third almost together. STEEPLECHASE. .T. W. Savidan 1 L. Clapham ;.... 2 A. Clarke 3 Time, 12m 445. Fastest time, J. W. Savidan, 10m 28s. On the word go, M. Moran went away fast, followed by Clarke, Whitten, McNiel, and Clemen, all taking advantage of thenstart. With runners between them, they were followed by the back markers, Barker, Crum, Cooper, and Savidan, the last named starting off almost at a sprint. The time for the first lap was 3m l!)s. At the commencement of the second lap, one competi-

tor knocked a hurdle over, and stopped to pick it up, an unusual procedure, and very annoying to the back markers. Horan was still in command, followed by Clarke, McNiel, Claphain, and Whltten, and at this stage Clapham appeared to be the probable winner, as lie was taking things very easily. C. Scown headed a bunch of five or six who were trying to eaten up to the front division. These were followed by Cooper and Savidan, the latter running in the style that won him the New Zealand cross-country championship. Savidan lengthened his stride at the hill, and gained about 100 yds on the field. Cooming- past the grandstand for the third time. Horan- was leading Clarke by five yards, with McNeil close behind. Had Clapham taken the lead at this stage he would have won. With one lap to go Clarke was in front, followed by Clapham and McNeil. Savidan passed Cooper as he was running up the hill for the last time. Passing the grandstand Clarke and Clapham both jumped the hurdle well, and Savidan received a great ovation from the crowd. As they came into the straight. Savidan was leading Clapham by ten yards. Eventually Savidan won easily by 15 yards from Clapham, who defeated Clarke by 5 yards. PUTTING THE 16LB SHOT. A. Clarke 1 C. Torbett - H. Macdonald Distance, 33ft B*in. THROWING THE DISCUS. C. Torbett 1 K. G. Kirkwood - It. B. Whitten 3 Distance, 103 ft 2Jin.
