George Joseph Silver (29) pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence and was committed to the Supreme, Court for. trial on iwo charges of forgery, at the Police Court to-day. Silver, for whom Mr. J. F. W. Dickson appeared, was charged with forging tiie name of Clarence Holloran to a receipt for £'■) 2/, and also forging the same name to a post ollice money order for a similar sum.
The evidence showed that Holloran, once a ward of the State, asked Silver to write to the Education Department in April last and ask when he could obtain some money which was due to him. Later he saw Silver, who told witness that ho had not got a reply. However, Silver received a letter addressed to Holloran, opened it and took the money order for f!J 2/ to Mr. Cupit, Child Welfare oificer, and representing himself to be Holloran, obtained the order. Silver signed the receipt in the name of "C. Holloran," , and then cashed it at the post oflice the .same day, again signing Holloran's name when obtaining payment.
When interviewed by Detective Packman about the matter, Silver said, he had been authorised by Hollorait to sign for the letter. Since he had been on •bail Silver had seen Holloran and asked him to say that Silver had been given permission to get the money and sign for it. This Hollorau refused to do. The next day Silver again saw Holloran and gave him £9.
