WELLINGTON, Wednesday.

A washout, estimated to be I.2ft deep and 75ft in width, occurred on the railway line between Te Hero and Waikanae this afternoon, and as a result all railway traffic on the Manawatu line was dfsorganised, trains being unable to pass the spot until late to-night. The washout occurred at a time when expresses were expected from northern stations and from Wellington. It was therefore necessary to dispatch trams from Wellington to the spot and also to have a train in readiness at the other side in order to take passengers" from the Wellington-Auckland express. This express should have left Wellington at 2 p m. but it did not leave until 3 p.m. Passengers were duly transhipped at the When the Wellington-bound expresses arrived from Napier and from New Plymouth the passengers were transhipped to trains waiting on the Wellington side of the spot.
