PENAL BUS FARES.
PROPRIETORS FINED.
"MAKE IT EXPENSIVE," SAYS S.M
Two prosecutions were heard before Mr. Wyvcni Wilson, S.M., yesterday, when the proprietors of the motor bus service between Auckland and Te Papapa and the proprietor of a motor bus service between Titirangi and the city were prosecuted for failing to charge the penal fare of 2d within a quarter of a mile of the tram terminus. In each case evidence was given that passengers who boarded the buses within a quarter of a mile were not charged the penal fare required by the Motor Omnibus Traffic Act. The magistrate, in convicting the defendants, said he regarded the offence as a serious one and thought there should be some statutory provision whereby the licenses of such offenders should be endorsed, and if they persisted in flouting the Act their licenses should be cancelled. He fined the defendants each £'2 and costs, and remarked that there was only one way of preventing the practice and that was to make it expensive to the offenders.
