CHESS.
AUCKLAND CLUB'S TOURNEYS,
Several competitors in tourneys at the Auckland Chess Club failed to put in an appearance on the opening night. It is understood that on this occasion they will not be penalised, but in future all absentees will lose by default, unless the director of play has been notified.
Three games were completed in the handicap. P. R. Jeffreys defeated G. Sale, from whom he was receiving pawn and move; R. Putman, receiving pawn and move, had the best of the opening but failed to hold the advantage, and went down to J. Sutton; H. H. Smith conceded pawn and move to G. H. Edwards, who demonstrated his superiority.
In the championship, J. C. Grierson registered a fairly easy win against W. A. Donald, who is rather out of practice. D. Jones was not in his usual good form, and went down to C. C. Roberts. The game between P. R. Jeffreys and G. Sale is unfinished, with no apparent advantage to either player.
In the intermediate level J. F. Sullivan proved too good for Dr. Friedlander, whose play was not up to his usual standard. R. Putman had no chance with C. Moller, who scored a decisive win. , In the minor level R. Drott defeated J. A. Sutton, who is a new member and will do better later on.
