RAIN MARS 'VARSITY RUGBY.

AUSTRALIANS' TOUR.

LAST MATCH OF SERIES.

DEFEATED BY AUCKLAND

LAMPORT'S FINE GAME. In the final match of their New Zealand tour, the Australian University Rugby footballers were beaten by the Auckland University team by 11 points to S at Eden Park yesterday afternoon. Torrential rain at times almost blotted out the teams and sparkling back play ■was out of the question. Under the adverse conditions the game "was very evenly contested and the win might easily have gone the other way. There was a crowd of 3000. The teams lined out as follows:— Australia (green).—McMullen, Dangar, Nicholas, Barker, A. Kennedy, McLean, Lamport, Ramsden, Morton, Joyce, Cay, Nield, Dezarnaulds, Morey, Cunningham. Auckland (blue). —Bush, Minns, Carter, Qoodwin, Stotter, McKay, Jenkin, Linton, Colgan, Clarke, Jenkin, Brooker, Anderson, Robinson, Edwards. With the wind and rain behind them, the Australians surprised the crowd in the first half by giving a lot more than they took. Almost from the start they had Auckland pinned to defence. The visiting forwards played with great dash against their heavier opponents, while the backs .«*£»>,.'. made brave efforts to open up the game with a greasy ball. In the second half Auckland took a hand and had all the better of the going until near the end, when the Australians rallied and got to within three points of the locals 1 total. Easily the most outsanding plaver on the field . was Lamport, the Australian captain. Time and again he made good openings and the Aucklanders found him very hard to get hold of. Kennedy, one of the visiting wingers, also handled well. On the Auckland side the work of Bush, who had plenty to do at full-back, most often .caught the eye. His kicking of the sodden ball ■ carried plenty of punch, while he tackled resolutely when called upon to do so. Of their six games in New Zealand, the Australians, who sail for hpme on Friday, have only won one, .but it must he remembered "that all the members of the team are imdergraduates \ and are considerably vounger and less experienced than the average New Zealanders who have opposed them. The matches played by the visitors were as follow: —

v. Victoria College, won, 6—3. v. Canterbury College, lost, B—2l ; v. Otago University, lost, B—2B. ; v. N.Z. Universities, lost, 3—15. I v. N.Z. Universities, lost, 17—2 G.

: v. N.Z. Universities, lost, 3—lß. I v. Auckland University, lost, B—ll. Points for, 53; points against, 122, How Auckland Won.

The game yesterday had not been poing five minutes before McMullen made a good but unsuccessful attempt to put over a penalty from the side line near the half-way flag. Twice in a few minutes the blues had.to force. In the loose the -Australian forwards played well, heeling the ball back -to Lamport, -who whipped it out smartly or went away on his own. A pelting rain shower passed over the field and a short kick Saw Auckland again: forced. Lamport used the line to 'advantage, while McMullen did his job well when Auckland had a short spell on attack. Once Lamport slipped through the defence and handed on to Nicholas, but the latter's pass to Kennedy was weak, a great chance being lost.. Again Lamport shot through brilliantly, only to see his pass "o begging. Next Auckland were penalised for obstruction and McMullen put the ball over. Australia 3, Auckland 0. Just before half-time Jenkin got the Auckland backs moving, but twice Minns failed to. take the greasy ball and th& visitors were -in front at the breather. -

Early in the second spell Australia infringed in the. tight and Bush equalised the figures. Auckland then made a fine rally and for a period outplayed the ereens. The local pack carried play through the Australian defence and Edwards scored. The kick failed. There was an exchange of kicks between Bush and McMullen, both full-backs taking the ball well. At Auckland's next offensive Jenkin scored a neat try. A scrum was put down a few yards out from the line and Eobinson and Edwards claimed the ball. Jenkin worked the dummy and then shot through as the scrum was breaking up, scoring well out. Bush kicked a fine goal. Auckland 11, Australia 3. Thence to the end of the play the Australians improved, although a very determined dash by Goodwin almost brought the locals another score. The visitors registered the best try of the day when Lamport made a good opening at midfield, and then shot the ball out to McLean, to Nicholas, to Barker, to Kennedy, who capped a fine movement by "sprinting over, Minns just failing to get up to him before he scored. McMullen surprised the crowd by sending over a fine kick. Australia tried ha°d to wipe off the remainder of the deficit, but without success, and the game ended in semi-darkness with the scores: Auckland University 11 Australian Universities 8 Mr. L. Guiney was referee.

PORTER AGAIN HONOURED DOMINION UNION'S AFFAIRS.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Management Committee of the New Zealand Eugby Union met this evening. The secretary of the English Rugby Union wrote as follows: '\Ac a meeting of the Rugby Union committee held on April 12, tiie resolution of the International Board relating to the Dominions was discussed, and it was decided to write to each of the Dominion unions recommending them to agree to the terms of the letter sent to the Dominions by the honorary secretary of the International Board regarding tne adoption by the Dominions of tiie laws of the game as framed by the International Board."

On the recommendation of the selectors, C. G. Porter (Wellington) was appointed captain, and W» C. Dalley (Canterbury) vice-captain of the New Zealand team which is to tour Australia this month.

The extra half-back required to complete the team for Australia lias not yet been selected. Mr. E. MeKenzie, chairman of the Selection Committee, said the position had been offered to M. F. Page (Canterbury), but that player had been unable to arrange the' necessary leave. Mr. MeKenzie stated that he would get in touch with the other members of the Selection Committee to-mor-row, and definitely fill the vacancy. The Hawke's Bay Union notified that it was issuing a challenge to Wairarapa to play for the Eanfurly Shield on July 20.

The Buller Union wrote applying for a subsidy of £100 for the purpose of sending a representative team on tour in the South Island. It was decided to request the union to supply an estimate of the cost of the tour and a return of the terms it was receiving from the unions it was proposed to visit.

It was decided to circularise affiliated unions asking them what ground charges they would ask if allocated matches against the British team next season.

The Southland Union wrote asking for n. definition of the word "hacking" as used in the rules. It was decided to reply that "hacking" meant ''indiscriminate kicking." The Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, notified the union that he would be pleased to accept the office of natron to the New Zealand Union for a further term.

THE MOASCAR CUP.

YET TO FIND A HOME.

NO PLACE IN 'VARSITY CONTESTS

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")

WELLINGTON, this day

Indications are that the Moasear Cup has not yet closed its unhappy career. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union a recommendation was made that the cup should be offered to the New Zealand University Colleges for annual competition, and it was hoped that a home had been found for the trophy at last. But though the offer has not yet been officially made, three of the eight members of the New Zealand University Football Council have expressed thei doubt that they can do anythink with the cup. They consider it impossible to induce all the colleges to travel sufficiently to play even two matches for the cup (if the contest were played on the knockout system), unless the games are added to the already overweighted Easter Inter-'Varsity Tournament. In addition, the council is not empowered to deal with matters such as this. It was coristituted to control the university tours in New Zealand and Australia, and considers that it has authority to do no more than pass the offer on to the various 'university colleges. So it is apparent that the cup will still seek a home for some time to come.
