RACING AT NAPIER PARK.

TO-MORROW'S MEETING

STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

THE PROGRAMME REVIEWED

INTERESTING RACING EXPECTED. The winter meeting of the Napier Park Pacing Club will open at Greenmeadows to-morrow, and, though the fields are not large, in many instances there is sufficient material to make the events interesting.

The opening event is the Moko Hack Hurdles, for which Tresham is top weight. This horse showed ability over the small obstacles, when he ran second to Modern at the Otaki meeting earlier in the month. Kaiti was good on the flat, and would only need to jump to be troublesome. Grand National won over hurdles at the Woodville summer meeting, while Pale Star failed over hurdles at the Hawke's Bay autumn meeting, but previous to that was a fairly good performer on the flat. He may have improved in his jumping in the meantime. Abisogne was second in a hurdle race at the Poverty Bay Turf Club's meeting in February, and Purse Pr,qud was third in a hurdle race at the same fixture. : Fine Acre scored over a mile at Otaki, but has yet to be tried over hurdles. Probably the best backed will'be

TRESHAM. GRAND NATIONAL.

lii" the Petane Hack Steeplechase, Woden, who is at the head of the acceptors, has not raced for some time, though a season or two ago he showed good jumping ability over big country. Alaric should be improved with his recent racing, but Royal Elm, after his running at Egmont and Wanganui, will be in demand. Master Arch, Lieutenant Bill, and Mandarine may prove best of the others. The best backed may be—

ROYAL ELM. ALAEIC. Ten are carded for the Meanee Hack Handicap. Mangahaere has shown good form this; season, winning the Kask Handicap at. the last Napier Park meeting, while at the Manawatu summer fixture he scored over six furlongs, and has been placed on several other occasions. Bold Front has been successful up to a mile during the last few months. Sylvan Dell scored over six furlongs at Dannevirke, and Glyn Dim accounted for the Novice Stakes of similar distance at Masterton. Tourist and Nightwitch may have most friends of the others engaged. The ''favourite division may be— . &■.

MANGAHAERE SYLVAN DELL.

I Only five remain in the Hawke's Bay ! Steeplechase. Ballyfarnon showed good form when he ran second to Vexatious in the Grandstand Steeplechase at Wanganui. Frisco Jack is a good quick fencer when right, but he fell in his only effort this season at Marton a few weeks ago. Woden is engaged in the Petane Hack Steeplechase, while Bendower won the Maiden Hunters' Steeplechase at the Waikato Hunt meeting last October. Perhaps the best fancied will be—

BALLYFARNON.

Nukumai heads the list of those engaged in the Ahuriri Hurdles, and even with 12st should go well, seeing he won the Grand National Hurdles last season with 31b less. Perle de Leon has not raced for some time, but Novar has performed well over hurdles this season, being third in his .last \ effort —the May Hurdles afc Wanganui—to' Eed Fuchsia and Aberfeldy. Beaumont is a pretty useful jumper, while Home Made and Peshwa are both winners over the " sticks." The bulk of the money may go on—■

NOVAE. NUKUMAI.

Nine have been paid up for in the Stewards' Handicap. Merry Damon failed twice at Otaki, but should be improved. Eoyal Damon won over seven furlongs at Feilding, and has been prominent in some of his races since then. Vesperus has not raced for some time, but performed well last season. Huikai won the Flying Handicap at Waipukurau, while of those lower down Queen's Choice and Shrewd may have most support. Probably backers will declare for—

EOYAL DAMON. HTJIKAI.

The day's sport will conclude with the Settlers' Handicap, and when the totalisator closes most money may be on—

SEASON'S FIXTURES.

(By WHALEBONE.)

June 14, 15—Napier Park Racing Club. June 20, 22—South Canterbury Jockey Club. June 21, 22—Hawke's Bay J.C. June 29—Waverley R.C. June 20—Ashburton County R.C. July 10, 11, 13—Wellington R.C. July 25 —Waimnte District Hunt Club. July 25, 27—Gisborne R.C. July 27—South Canterbury Hunt Club.

That good little sprinter Lady's Boy is still showing signs of lameness as the result of his fall in the Members' Handicap run on the first day of the Auckland winter meeting.

The Quin Abbey—Mountain Dream filly Good Idea is making good progress under J. M. Buchanan's care at headquarters and building up into a shapelylooking sort. She will be kept in steady work during the winter months with a view of racing at the early spring meetings.

Sleepy Sol is just doing sufficient work to keep his condition right, as he will not be required to race just yet a while. He was going particularly well when he came to_ grief in the Penrose hurdle race at the recent meeting, and looks like developing into a useful hurdle candidate later on.

Merry Damon, who failed in his two races at the Otaki meeting, is engaged in the principal flat event at Napier Park to-morrow. He is at the top of the handicap, but will need to improve to defeat some of those lower down in the list.

M. Ryan is busy educating the rising two-year-old Pal, by Snow King from Marble Bell. This youngster has grown and improved a good deal since first taken in hand by the Ellerslie trainer, and though still a bit on the small side he is a very compact juvenile showing plenty of quality for his age.

Revel, who has been off the scene for some time past, has been nominated for the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase. This gelding finished second to Wiltshire in the Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie 12 months ago, and would only require to run up to that form to have a good chance in the cross-country event at Hastings next week.

The three-year-old gelding Justify went a 6olid race when lie finished fourth in the mile hack event on the last day of the June meeting at Ellerslie. Justify, who has not been over-taxed during the present season, promises to develop into a useful performer, and is likely to do much better with a bit of age to assist him. Glena Bay went a good race in the Carbine Plate when he finished second to Otairi. The Te Rapa trained gelding raced over hurdles'at the recent Waikato meeting, and although he failed to get in the money his showing was decidedly promising* and if kept to that, department of the racing game he should do. well.

Sir Goerge Clifford has sold the stallion The Ace to Mr. T.• Hennesy, of Opotiki, and ho will do stud duty in the spring in the Bay of Plenty. The Ace, who is 11 years old, is an English importation by Bayardo. He did no racing in the Dominion, though he showed exceptional speed during the brief period he was in training at Riccarton. He has sired some useful gallopers, the best of them being Centrepiece.

While at the post for the King George Handicap on the second day of the Great Northern meeting High Pitch received a severe kick just below the hock, and this no doubt accounted for his failure to show up in that event. After the meeting High Pitch was taken back to his owner's place at Pacroa, and it may be some time before he is fit to race again. High Pitch was in great fettle, and his connections are extremely unlucky to lose his services at this time of the season.

Owing to having sustained a severe loss By the death of Millais just after he had purchased it, Mr. Cecil Louisson has been presented by Mr. Frank Ormond, who sold Millais, with a yearling by Arausio (imp.)—Getyne. The stock by this well-bred sire promise well, and the youngster may amply repay the loss sustained by the death of Millais. It will be pleasing to chronicle successes for Mr. Louisson's colours, no matter by what horse they are carried.

It is seldom that an important race is decided in England without the discovery in Australia, and particularly in New South Wales,' where the more important studs are situated, of thoroughbreds •possessing similar lines of blood to those of the winner. Last year's Derby result was most welcome here (remarks a Sydney writer), particularly as the winner, Felstead, continued a remarkable sequence of Derby performances begun by Spearmint, a son of Carbine. The relationship of a sire or a brood mare to an important winner is nothing more than a recommendation. There is too much chance associated with the breeding of a winner to allow of any hard and fast rules; but the success of a particular line invariably sways the minds of breeders when planning their matings for a season. In this respect Mr. R. J. Edmonds, of Larras Lake, is in a very fortunate position. At the dispersal sale of the thoroughbreds at the Kingsland stud he became the owner of the imported mare Fairy Lamp, comparatively a young mare, who is by Volta from Fairy Orb, a half-sister to Athgreany, the grandam of Trigo, winner of this year's Derby. Should he desire it, he is in a position to breed on a cross very similar to that which produced Trigo, for Trigo is by Blandford, a son of Swynford, and in Australia there are several Swynford horses, including Top Gallant (imp.), and ( Mr. Herbert Thompson's young sire, Canusa (imp.), who has had but one season at the stud. Swynford's | sons, the world over, receive a fine adver-1 tisement by the result of the classic. Messrs. E. C. and R. J. Brown, of the Angle stud, Duddo, will also be pleased that Walter Gay ran so well. At their stud they have a half-brother in Shillinglee (imp-), who is by Llangibby. Shiliinglee, with limited opportunities, has sired several good winners, and only last Saturday a two-year-old by him, Royal Money, won well at Randwick. Trigo is a member of the No. 22 family, as was Manna, winner of the race in 1925. There are several sires from the same group in Australia, including Tippler (imp.), whose two-year-olds this season have performed with marked consistency.

In his forthcoming engagements Inferno will be ridden by N.-C. Trillo, if he secures his license.

Oratorian is the name that has been given to the yearling son of Hunting Song and Oratress. The yougster is therefore a half-brother to Oratrix, Concentrate and Oral.

Grand National, who is engaged in the Moko hurdle race at Napier Park, is likely to be accorded good support in that event. He has several fair performances to his credit in minor hurdle races, and is regarded as a promising candidate for jumping honours.

Tresham, Tourist and Inferno left Trentham for Napier Park yesterday. Since running second over hurdles at Otaki Tresham has twice schooled well on the tracks. F. Corlett is his probable rider.

Valkon has been entered for the Wairoa Handicap to be run at the Waverley meeting on June 29. He should be improved as the result of his racing at the Great Northern meeting, and may pick up a stake before long, providing he trains on satisfactorily.

Fine Acre, who won the Rangiuru Hack Handicap at the recent Otaki meeting, is engaged in the Moko hurdle race at Napier Park to-morrow. He is trained at Foxton by A. M. Wright, who has had a lengthy and successful experience with jumping horses, in the past.

Matu has made a complete recovery from the soreness which prevented him doing his best in the Wanganui Steeplechase. He is again in strong work and looking well. He will compete at the Hawke's Bay meeting next week, followed by the Wellington Racing Club's fixture.

Nadarino has been most successful since he was sold to Mr. V. Riddiford, a West Australian sportsman. He recently carried top weight in the Winter Handicap at the West Australian Turf Club's meeting, and won with a little in hand. This makes his fourth victory in his last seven starts.

When Pompeius finished second to \Velkne in the Fitzroy Handicap on the fiial day of the Great Northern meeting fin put up a creditable effort, and was implying on in good style over the concluding stages of the race. This gelding is very partial to heavy going, and it taken to the Wellington meeting next month he should pay expenses on the trip.

The Avondale trainer W. Oough left for Hawke's Bay on Monday last with Merry Mason and Princess Rain. Merry Mason is engaged in the Settlers' Handicap on the opening day of the Napier Park meeting, and Princess Rain claims an engagement in the Green meadows Handicap, five furlongs, on the second day of the same fixture. Both horses will race at the Hawke's Bay meeting tho week following, and they are also engaged at .the Waverlev meeting, to be hefd'on June 29. The Paeroa horseman G. Spinks will ride these horses in their respective races at the Southern meetings.
