TEACHERS' SALARIES.
PROPOSED CHANGES DEBATED
INFORMATION WANTED.
The proposed new scale of teachers' salaries was the subject of considerable discussion at a meeting of the Manawatu branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute in FaTmerston North.
The president, Mr. F. W. Moore,.stated that the radical changes t were ' that higher salaries would be possible without shifting from one school to another, and the stabilisation of staffs, which would be of tremendous merit. Under the scheme teachers would not apply for appointments but would be transferred like officers in other Government Departments. The scheme in its present form was placed before-the branches of the N.Z.E.I. for their approval or otherwise. If the scheme was approved, details would be planned by the Director of Education.
"I think it is going to retard progress greatly," declared Mr. Morine. "Under the new proposal it might take a teacher fourteen years to reach the salary which lie may now* draw in four years."
Mr. F. C. Campbell considered the scheme was not very attractive to those entering the profession
The president thought that the average assistant could reach the maximum in under 30 years.
Mr. Liggens stated the scheme meant robbing tbe lower grade teachers to increase the salaries of the higher.
Miss Bailey considered the scheme was too indefinite and a resolution could not be passed; It was the country schools it was going to affect, and the efficiency of country schools would be impaired.
Mr. E. Barry considered that the grading numbers corresponding to the efficiency bars should be known.
After further discussion and after several amendments had been proposed and lost, the following motion was passed: "That this branch does not express an opinion on the new grading system until such time as full information is provided."
The President: You are asking for information you won't get.
