CHRISTCHURCH, this day.
Exactly a year ago yesterday the night express - service between Christ>church and Dunedin was begun. The train filled a need,'and although" during the week the traffic . has noi been great the average number .of "passengers carried on Sunday nights from Christchurch has been about 200.. The average on other nights is about 50.
It has been found-by the "Railway Department that passengers carried on the night express are not "new- traffic," for the numbers carried by the expresses have dropped, in almost the same ratio as the increase on the night express.
Besides passengers, perishable cargo from Invercargill i? carried on the night express, and the result of this 4 has been that during the oyster season large quantities cjOme. forward, arriving in Christchurch the morning after they are landed at the Bluff.
