Whilst great interest is being taken in the construction of high-speed passenger liners, the fact is perhaps not generally realised that much faster cargo ships are being built than were common a few years ago. It appears that this tendency is more marked on the Continent than in Great Britain, and it is stated in "The Motor Ship" that four well-known Continental ship owners between them have 30 cargo liners under construction, varying in speed from 14 to 15 knots. On the other hand, the majority of cargo ships which have been ordered in Great Britain since the beginning of the year are tramps of moderate speed, and the question arises whether this class of vessel will retain the position in shipping which it has held for so long, in face of the increasing competiton of the fast cargo liner.
