HOCKEY.

LADIES' ASSOCIATION.

SATURDAY'S GAMES REVIEWED

FORM OF THE PLAYERS.

Saturday saw the commencement of the second round of matches in all sections of the ladies' senior competition. In the junior grade Papakura, Somerville and Technical B were the winners in their respective matches, whilst Papatoetoe and Y.W.C.A. A drew. In the senior grade Mount. Eden defeated Y.W.C.A., whilst Wesley accounted for Somerville.

The Y.W.C.A. seniors were again without the services of Miss Ward in goal, but their forward line was greatly strengthened by the inclusion of Miss M. McLachlan, who scored both goals gained by her team. On the whole, the game may be said to have been of fairly good standard, despite the fact that the team combination was sacrificed far too much by players resorting to solo efforts. Mount Eden began to press from the bully, but relief was given, and play then went to Mount Eden's circle, but through faulty centring Y.W.C.A. failed to score. Play then returned to Eden's territory. Miss McLachlan then took command of the ball, and after a good rim netted the first goal for Y.W.C.A. Shortly afterwards Miss McLachlan netted a second goal for Y.W.C.A. Just prior •to half-time Mrs. Hamlin, of Mount Eden, received the ball, and after a good run down the field scored Eden's first goal. After the resumption Y.W.C.A. went to the attack, and had Mount Eden's defence hard pressed. Several corners for Y.W.C.A. resulted, all of which Mount Eden managed to clear. Play then centred round Y.W.C.A.'s citadel, and Mrs. Hamlin scored another goal, equalising the. scores. After the bully play returned to Eden's circle, but Y.W.C.A. failed in their efforts to regain the lead, despite the fact that the Eden defence was forced to concede them three more corners. Just prior to the end of the game Miss Lowe scored a third goal for Mount Eden, the game ending: Mount Eden 3, Y.W.C.A. 2. Mr. H. Rankin controlled the match.

Miss P. H. Dawson and Miss C. Bestic rendered good service for Mount Eden, whilst Miss M. Raisher and the backs of Y.W.C.A. are worthv of.mention.

Very little can he said re the standard of play in the first half of the game played between Wesley and Somerville on ground 5. Both teams were handicapped hy the absence of players, Somerville being without Misses Hall and Andrews, and Wesley without Miss L. Thomas.

Wesley won the toss, and elected to play uphill against tlie sun. Wesley did most of the attacking throughout the game, hut their attempts to score were repeatedly sooilt hy the fine work done by Somerville's goalie, who played a great game for her team. The game

could not be called a good one, too much hard hitting and too little combined 'work being witnessed. The tendency tf obstruct and bunch was also a very noticeable feature of the game. Somerville were the first to score. Miss Frances netting from a scramble in the Wesley circle. Wesley shortly afterwards returned to tie attack, Miss 11.

Clark netting and equalising the scores. Wesley continued to attack, and it was not long before Miss E. Murray sent in a hot shot from a very sharp angle, giving Wesley the lead. Somerville pressed, but all efforts faj'ed, half-time being called with the score: Wesley 2, Somerville 1. *

After half-time an improvement in the play of both teams was noticed, and at the outset Wesley resorted to some nice passing, which resulted in Miss T. Brodie finding the net twicc in quick succession with good shots. Wesley, howev<jr, did not have things altogether their own way in the second half, Somerrille making strong efforts to score, but it was not until after many attempts that Miss Claudet was able to find the net from a quick pass in front, the ball goinsr into goal off a defender. The game ended shortly afterwards with the score, Wesley 4, Sonierville 2. Mr. A. Playle controlled the game. For Wesley, the play of Misses H. Saunders, M. Lamond and M. White is worthy of special mention, whilst for Somerville Misses Francis and Iloyte were prominent.

General Notes. The competitions will be advanced a further stage next Saturday, when Arawa will meet Wesley, and Mount Eden will oppose Sonierville in the senior grade. Technical A will meet Y.W.C.A., and Papakura will meet Mount Eden in the A section of the junior grade, while Manurewa will meet Wesley, and Sonierville will meet Technical B in the B section. In view of the present positions of the teams in all sections the results of these games are awaited with interest. " On Thursday nisrht next Miss P. H. Dawson is repeating her lecture # and demonstration on the game, as given by her last year. It is hoped that there will he a srood attendance, as the lecture should be interesting and helpful to all players of both grades.
