SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The opening function of the Lyceum Club will take place in the splendid new premises, which cover all the top floor of Smith and Caughey's new .premises, 011 the second of next month. The annual meeting has been postponed till July 9, instead date previously arranged.

In view of her approaching marriage, Miss Julia Buckley, a daughter of one of Matamata's oldest residents, was entertained by the Matamata Old Girls' Association, and was presented with a copper hearth set. The presentation was made by Mrs. S. Stockdale, who wished the guest every happiness. • * * *

A party was given by Mesdames J. Grieve and C. August in honour of the second anniversary of their wedding, at their home, Troonville Avenue, Eden dale, on Saturday evening. Mrs. Paton presided over tlie usual general monthly meeting of the Te Atatu Women's Institute, on June 6.

There was a good attendance of members. After tlie business portion of the meeting—which took some considerable time—was completed, a competition was held, which was followed by a most interesting paper on open-air schools. The usual monthly parce lfor the hospital auxiliary was nnide up aud fresh work given out. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mestiames Love, Chadwick and Robey. The meeting was closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

Mrs. H. A. Gordon, Epsom, was hostess at a farewell dance given at her home in honour of Miss Frolic Gordon, who leaves Auckland next Saturday for Vavau, where she is to be married to Mr. Jim Revel. The evening was spent in dancing and bridge, and Miss Verna Wisliart's song from "Madame Butterfly" was very much appreciated. The guest of honour was gowned in a beautiful white georgette French model embroidered in silver, and bordered with a wide hem of ostrich feathers. The United Birkenhead and Northcote Football Association held a successful dance on Saturday evening in the Victoria Hall, Birkenhead, when tlie music was supplied by Mayall's orchestra. A pleasant evening was spent on Saturday by members of the Auckland Athenian Club at the Operatic Society's Hall, Grafton Road. Mr. and Mrs. T. B. D. Esam, and Miss Beryl Esam were the host and hostesses, and after they had been formally introduced by the club's president, Mr. Wilfred Wright, dancing was indulged in to music rendered by the Kit Kat Dance Orchestra. During the evening several musical items were rendered. The stage was decorated with palms, ferns, and lycopodium, and multicoloured lights. A miniature swan lake glittered at the back of the stage. The following contributed musical and instrumental items during the evening. Messrs. Webster and Wood, The Snappy Three, Mr. Charles Muston, Miss Kate Christie, Mr. Arthur Reid. Butterfly novelty hats were distributed during the evening, and one of the most pleasant sessions was brought to a close just before midnight.

Yesterday afternoon Mrs. Denize gave a very pleasant afternoon tea in Messrs. John Court, Ltd's tearoom to several of her friends, to mark the occasion of Miss Bessie Josephs' engagement. The tables were beautifully decorated wj f .i Iceland poppies and maidenhair fern. On Saturday the pupils of Mr. James Hutton were entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Tyler, Mountain Road, Epsom. The music room looked bright with bowls of choice flowers and autumn foliage. A delightful musical programme was given and a dainty afternoon tea was served.
