Ashburton Trots.

Longbeach Handicap To Gemlight. Horse Drops Deafl. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") ASHBURTON, this day. There is glorious weather and a large attendance for the Ashburton Trotting Club's winter meeting. The track is in good order. The Opening Event. Lady Brent and Golden Vale w:-re scratched for the Trial Handicap, witli which the programme opened. Oyone was a warm favourite. Peter .Whvte led Looan Fraseiy Glenlake, Harvest Binoen, Oinadora in the early stages. GlenFake moved up along the back and took charge six furlongs from home,. Cyone, Sandy Pointer and Kate Logan 'beingnest. Glenlake stalled off Sandy Pointer, to win by three lengths, Cyone, who was easing up at the finish, being SIX lengths away, with Kate Logan and Oinadora next. Favourite Bracket Beaten. The Avonesis-Great Harvester bracket was best backed in the Longbeach Handicap, for which thirty-one trotters started. Golden Girl led at the start, but soon broke, leaving Elando in front. Gemlio-lit took charge after going two furlongs, with Rustle next, while Great Harvester was third. At the end of_ six furlongs it was a procession, Gemlight beating Ruetle by three lengths, -with Great Harvester eight lengths away, third, and Deceitful fourth. The Chief Event. A food field of twenty-three started in the Ashburton County Handicap, Wrackler, Athalone, Harvest Child and Travis Axworthy being fancied in that order. Lingfield and Maiwhariti led Evelyn Locanda and Genuine in the early stages, and at the end of half a mile Travis Axworthy joined in. There was little change till half a mile from home, where Travis Axworthy broke, while Athalone and Wrackler were i handy at this stage. Wrackler : joined the front lot in the straight, 'but Lingfield 'beat him by half a length., Maiwhariti was two lengths away, witn Evelyn Locanda, Athalone and Genuine next. . ■. . ■•' '.. "•,! The Classic Event. Reylet and Aquilin were scratched for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, leaving eight starters. Grand Canyon, No-ino-o Ngingo and Purser were backed in°that order. John Jinks took charge at the start and led past the stand from King's Cup, Ngingo Ngingo, Rokena and Flying Prince, with Grand Canyon a few lengths away and Purser tailed off after a bad start. Ngingo. Ngingo joined the leader six furlongs from the post ind John. Jinks only a slight advantage at the entrance to the straight, where Real Huon and Flying Prince were handy. In a great finish John Jinks beat Real Huon by a short length, with Ugingo Ngingo half a length away thir, followed by Flying Prince, who was a length further back. ■ V.-. ; '-.- •'■■'.!
