THE NGAIO TKEE. The night swung darkly Over the sea, And a mad wind tortured The ngaio tree. The little leaves -whimpered And sobbed with pain. But I lifted my face To the whips of the rain. The great black rocke And the wet salt weed Crouched in their dread Of the tide's fierce greed, I ran to the tree And, terror-wise, I suddenly clung And hid my eyes. But the leaves that had danced So gay in the sun, "Wept and entreated, Clamoured and spun, Till I covered my ears To the things they said And the spears of the rain Beat down oa my head.
