GIRLS SHOT FOR FUN.
PRISON FOR RECKLESS YOUTH
"You ought to suffer for this," said the Grimsby stipendiary when he sentenced William Randall Webster (16), to three days' imprisonment for shooting at girls with an airgun. Two girl fishworkers said they went into a recreation ground for a walk during the dinner hour and saw Webster there with a gun. From fifteen yards' range he fired at them, and as they ran away in alarm he fired three times, pellets striking them on the calf, knee and thigh. The stipendiary directed that a summons be served on Webster for assaulting one of the girls, Ivy Chaplin. She told the Court that pellets penetrated her oilskin leggings and clothing, but did not puncture her skin. Webster said that he only shot for fun and not to hurt the girls. "I am very, very sorry," he added. The Stipendiary: You are fortunate not to be charged with a graver offence. In addition to the imprisonment, Webster was fined 5/ for using the gun without a license.
