A GENEROUS RESPONSE.

STRONG ENTRY FROM THE SOUTH. TWENTY-FOUR ENTRIES FOR ADAMS , MEMORIAL. TheCntries received yesterday by Mr. A, G. Mabee, secretary of the Auckland Trotting Club, augur well for the success of the winter fixture this month. The classes are fairly tight, which means that only proved horses are eligible, but a glance through the list of nominations shows that there has been a fine response by owners over a wide area. In the principal events the local contingent includes Machine Gun, Jewel Pointer, Gold Jacket, The Abbey and Torpedo Huon. But the Southerners are strong .and among"them are Silk Thread, Cardinal Logan, Dalineny, Dundas Boy, Kohara, Daphne de -Oro; Logan Chief and others. For the Adams' Memorial Cup an entry of 24 horses was received, and this race looks like providing the star turn of the meeting. The trotter Reynard, brought across from Sydney a few weeks ago, has not been noticed doing any fast work at Epsom. Long, steady jogging has mostly characterised his training, but he bears a good appearance, and may be well forward when the Auckland, meeting

opens. ■ , . T The Novice, by The Triumph, an J. Shaw's team, is very green yet. This pacer has plenty of size but will take time to come right and as yet does not α-o very steadily with the straps on. ° W. Clifton is'keeping: the pacers, The , Abbey and Dad's Hope going. They were out yesterday putting in plenty of joctfin". Both are well forward and with "ordinary luck The' Abbey should make a good showing in the big races this month. > Gold Jacket has come along quickly during the last couple of weeks and L. McMahon will have him ready for the bic races a fortnight hence. Gold Ja°cket is a particularly good pacer in heavy going and if he gets the track this way it will take something pretty good to keep lira from getting the money. . ■ A welcome entry for sprint events at the Auckland meeting- is Great Bingen. The, champion has had a very lean season and so far has not won'a race since August • last. ■ There seems to be something wrong when the best horse cannot win a race while moderates keep on collecting the money. There has not been a great deal doing at Epsom during the week, but if the weather is favourable from now on there should be some interesting workouts during the next fortnight. The track is invariably heavy at this time of the year, as it takes very little rain to put it out of order. Many of the trainers at Epsom will be paying an occasional visit to* Otahuhu, where they can get a run on the grass. . S Groat is working only "two horses for immediate racing at present. They are the useful pacer Tony Victor, and the trotter Floraline. The latter is a good sort in heavy going and the conditions are likely to suit him. this month. . . . i• i
