NEW SCHOLARSHIPS.

Founded At Oxford By Will Of

Sir H. Harmsworth.

UNUSUAL CONDITION.

(British Official Wireless.)

(Received 12 noon.)

RUGBY, June 6. Sir Hildebrand Harmsworth, formerly proprietor of the "Globe" newspaper, and brother of the late Lord Northchffe and Lord Rothermere, left £1,443,000. He left one-tenth of his estate to Morton College, Oxford, to create five scholarships.

One noteworthy condition regarding the scholarships 'is that they shall be available only for British subjects, who are Protestants and whose parents and paternal grandfathers and great-grand-fathers are, or were, both British-born subjects and Protestants.

The scholarships will be of very considerable value, as after the payment of duties it would appear that the net sum of about £90,000 will be available to endow them, giving them an annual value of about £900 each.

DEATH DUTIES.

NO DESIRE TO HELP CHARITIES. (Australian and X.Z. Press Association.) (Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 6. The late Sir' H. Harmsworth explained that the terrible taxation entirely crushed his desire to benefit charities. His estate pays £450,000 in death duties.
