EVOLUTION IN SCHOOLS.

One of your correspondents is under the impression that the Government land settlement policy is confined to breaking- up large estates, whereas it includes waste lands. The Government lias adopted the most expeditious policy by offering improved lands first, which can be brought to immediate profit, whereas waste lands cannot be roaded, drained, surveyed and brought to full profit for a year or two. Neither could clear blocks of lands be roaded, surveyed, etc., from December to May, gs ill the case of the eight properties subdivided to the fifty settlers. Had the Government adopted tho method of your correspondent no land settlement would have been effected vet. J. MATHESON.

■ ■ .* Mr. Mulvihill's suggestion that I have

changed my opinion as regards evolution is quite untrue. His method of controversy is not honest, but, having wriggled into an indefensible position, he had to find some way of wriggling out of it. His confessed desire that McCabc's atheistic interpretation of evolution should be taught in our State schools is significant. It shows the need of watchfulness on the part of Christian parents. It is reassuring to have the declaration of the Minister of Education that his object is to secure that "some part of the wonderful scheme of creation should be discovered and a love of Nature implanted witli consequent reverence for its Creator." It would be very interesting if some teacher would describe an actual lesson on evolution in accordance with the new syllabus. There is no need for any secrecy. Parents are entitled to know what their children are being taught. XORMAX BURTON.
