UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.

AUCKLAND AND THE SUBSIDY. (To the Editor.) It is some months since the original offer of £25,000 was made by the Government to the chief cities of the Dominion. Two of these have accepted. Dunedin has advanced apparent good reasons for not accepting at present, but what of Sir Joseph Ward, on various occasions, has intimated that this offer has not been accepted by the Queen City. In his accounting of stewardship at the Town Hall on the 4th inst. this was' mentioned by him. Is it not high time that some united eifort was made by the people of Auckland so that pressure might be brought to bear upon the City Council to accept the amount, so that £50,000, including the subsidymight be employed in relief of distress during the winter season, which is now breaking upon us? Mr. H. R. Jenkins, M.P., in your issue of the sth inst. has made a very practical sug. gestiou in regard to the utilisation of a portion of this money on improvements at Hobson Bay; Sir Joseph has demonstrated' by facts and figures that much has been done in a few months by the United. Cabinet in an effort to restore prosperity and confidence in the Dominion, but if the Dominion's chief local body will not co-operate, as other smallei bodies have done, what shall be thought-, of us in this the day of our people's greatest need? WESLEY RICHARDS,
